AccessibilityListed buildings, such as natural heritage sites, museums and art galleries are popular tourists attractions. The Heritage Lottery Fund supports the Equality and Human Rights Commission campaign to educate service providers about how to make their buildings accessible to disabled people. LegislationHowever there are various problems associated with the provision of access for disabled visitors at listed buildings. For example it can be difficult to find a balance between accessibility and preserving the character of the building. Clause 21 of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) ensures that listed buildings are protected by legislation. Anyone wishing to undertake building work must obtain permission, and an access audit must be carried out before any changes to the building are made.
