In the News...Churches that Cannot Afford Disabled Access Forced to Close Many churches are closing because they cannot afford expensive building work needed to improve access for disabled people. The Church of Scotland estimated that the total cost of changes for its 1,500 places of worship is £8.8 million, whilst the Anglican Church is faced with a particular challenge because 13,000 of its buildings are ancient, most of them listed. The same applies to small, independent churches. Waddington Methodist Church, in Lincolnshire, which has a regular congregation of five, and which recently celebrated its centenary, will close next year, because of lack of funds. www.telegraph.co.uk August 2004 Wheelchair User Left Out in the Cold A wheelchair user was left angry after she was unable to access a cinema to see a film about disability. Claire Unwin wanted to see the film 'Inside I'm Dancing' at the city's Lonsdale cinema and was told it was on at an accessible screen. But when she turned up to watch the film, she discovered it had been moved to a screen that did not have wheelchair access. Mrs Unwin said: "I wanted to see the film because as a wheelchair user I thought I could relate to the subject. An angry Mrs Unwin then pointed out it was a bit ironic that a film about two wheelchair users was being shown at a screen where a wheelchair user couldn't go and see it. www.bbc.co.uk November 2004 Disability Grant on Hold Grants to community groups and churches in Edinburgh to fund vital disabled access upgrades, are on hold after the city council's investments failed to reap as much interest as expected. Organisations applying to the local authority for the money were promised subsidies of up to £5000 to help carry out improvements, but when they tried to collect the cash, officials told them it had already been "spent". A spokeswoman said: "We welcome the fact that Edinburgh City Council has gone beyond its statutory duties in creating a grant scheme which supports voluntary organisations in improving access for disabled people. It is, however, disappointing that current levels of funding may not be available to assist all of the interested organisations at this time." Edinburgh Evening News January 2005 |
